In short
Lilburn is a Gwinnett County city on U.S. 29, about 19 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta and 11 miles southwest of Lawrenceville. Its historic Old Town connects to the 10-acre Lilburn City Park and the 4.2-mile Camp Creek Greenway. In September 2026 its median sale price was $397,811 (Redfin), a little below the Gwinnett County median of $409,085.
Overview
Lilburn is in western Gwinnett County on U.S. 29 (Lawrenceville Highway), about 11 miles southwest of Lawrenceville, my home base, and about 19 miles from downtown Atlanta. It began as a railroad town, and the tracks still run through its historic Old Town.
What stands out to me is how close everything is: Old Town, City Hall and the library, a 10-acre city park and a greenway trail sit right next to each other.
History in brief
The Seaboard Air Line Railway founded Lilburn in 1890. It’s named for the railroad’s general superintendent, Lilburn Trigg Myers. The town was incorporated on July 27, 1910.
On November 15, 1920, a fire destroyed the business district except for two stores, while a volunteer bucket brigade saved the homes nearby. As cars took over from the railroad, most businesses moved out to Highway 29. A water line project in 1955 led to a new city government, and the town began to grow again. A new City Hall was completed in 2016, and Main Street was realigned where it meets U.S. 29 as part of the downtown revival.
Downtown & things to do
- Old Town Lilburn. The historic downtown has restaurants and shops and is made for walking. Golf carts are allowed too.
- City Hall and library. The brick City Hall with the clock tower in the photo above (340 Main Street) was built as a combined City Hall and library. The Gwinnett County Public Library’s Lilburn Branch uses the address 4817 Church Street.
- Food Truck Tuesday. On the second Tuesday of each month, May through October, food trucks and live music fill Lilburn City Park from 6 to 9 p.m.
- Yearly events. Sparkle in the Park is the city’s July 4 celebration, with music and fireworks. Lilburn Daze, an arts and crafts festival organized by the Lilburn Woman’s Club and co-sponsored by the city, is held on the second Saturday in October. The 2026 Holiday Parade goes down Main Street on Saturday, December 12, at 10 a.m.
Parks & outdoors
- Lilburn City Park. This 10-acre park at Main Street and Railroad Avenue has a big lawn, a bandshell, a splash pad, a playground, picnic pavilions and a lighted walking loop.
- Camp Creek Greenway. A 4.2-mile paved trail of sidewalk and boardwalk. From City Park it runs one way to Lions Club Park and the other way to Killian Hill Road. At City Park, a small spur bridge on the trail has become Lily’s Bridge, a memorial for pets that have died.
- Lions Club Park. This 51-acre county park has five baseball and softball fields, a playground and a 0.8-mile paved loop that connects to the greenway.
- Bryson Park. A 72-acre county park on Lawrenceville Highway with a lighted track, soccer fields, sand volleyball and a half-mile paved trail.
Getting around
U.S. 29 runs through the center of town, southwest toward Atlanta and northeast to Lawrenceville. Ride Gwinnett, the county’s bus service, serves Lilburn ($2.50 a ride on local buses), and its Route 30 stops at both Bryson Park and Lions Club Park. Check its route map for service near a specific address.
The city says trains still pass through Old Town about once an hour. If you’re looking at a home near the tracks, visit at different times of day.
Here’s my advice: before you make an offer, drive from the home to your work at the time you’d actually be commuting.
Homes & the market
Here’s where Lilburn stood in September 2026:
- Median sale price: $397,811 over the three months ending in September, down 3.0% from a year earlier (Redfin). For comparison, the median for all of Gwinnett County was $409,085.
- Typical home value: $391,563, down 2.0% from a year earlier (Zillow Home Value Index).
- Pace: homes sold after about 41 days on the market (69 a year earlier), for 97.7% of the list price on average. 38 homes sold, up from 31 a year earlier (Redfin).
In ZIP code 30047, which reaches beyond the city limits, Realtor.com counted 225 homes for sale in September 2026, with a median list price of $432,475.
Types of homes: Census estimates for 2020–2024 show that about 71% of the city’s homes are single-family detached houses and about 6% are townhomes or other attached homes. Most of the rest are in buildings with two or more units. About three in four were built between 1970 and 1999, and about 14% in 2010 or later.
If you’re buying your first home, Gwinnett’s Homestretch program has a price cap of $371,000 for an existing home and $425,000 for new construction. You don’t have to save it all at once: read my down payment help guide, and confirm whether you qualify with the county program and a licensed lender.

What’s next
- Porchline: RangeWater Real Estate is building 269 apartments on Railroad Avenue in partnership with the city and its Downtown Development Authority. A new parking deck with 267 public spaces is open, and in October 2026 the city said the final phases would continue for several more months.
- First & Main: Site work is finished on a 2.61-acre lot at First Avenue and Main Street. The Downtown Development Authority asked developers for concepts with 21 townhomes, a restaurant and two public parks, and it is reviewing the proposals. The city says plans are still conceptual.
- Downtown plan: Toole Design has delivered final recommendations for Old Town’s design, traffic flow and public spaces. These are recommendations, not approved projects.
